We are currently experiencing an increase of unemployment and with the imminent retirement of the first of the baby boomers looming on the horizon, there are two significant consequences for the future:

 
1. Employers need to pay more attention to staff retention.  It is good business to keep the best and let of the rest.
 
2. Employees need a broader range of skills and coping mechanisms to accommodate the increased workload and to be the best.

 
Competition for experienced and well trained staff has never been stronger.  The cost of losing valuable staff goes way beyond recruitment fees.  The distraction caused by loss of staff moral, time taken providing on the job training, not to mention all of those fruitless interviews before the best candidate is selected.  All of these costs can run into tens of thousands of dollars.  Retaining staff is much more cost effective.
